Welcome to the SNAP Web Site

SNAP (Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests ) is a self-help organization of men and women who were sexually abused by spiritual elders (Catholic priests, brothers, nuns, ministers, teachers, etc). Members find healing and empowerment by joining with other survivors. SNAP was founded by Barbara Blaine of Chicago in 1989. We are an all-volunteer group with local chapters scattered throughout the United States and Canada. We also have a very active on-line e-mail support group with members from throughout the world. See SOAR internet support group link on the next page.

SNAP's Mission:

  • SELF HELP: to reach out to as many survivors of sexual abuse by priests as possible

  • EDUCATION: to prevent further abuse through public education and advocacy.

  • SUPPORT GROUPS: SNAP chapters in various cities across the United States and Canada hold support groups for victims of clergy sexual abuse. Check the listing of regional offices below for information on groups in your area.

SNAP Local Support Groups:

SNAP Membership and Donation Information:

  • BECOME A SNAP MEMBER: Join and support the nation's foremost national advocacy group for victims of clergy sexual misconduct! SNAP is a 501(c) 3 tax-exempt organization.

SNAP Speakers Bureau:

  • NEED A SPEAKER FOR YOUR EVENT? Who is more qualified to speak about the issue of clergy sexual abuse than one of the nationally-recognized leaders of SNAP? We each have over ten years experience in helping victims heal, in seeking justice through the legal system and in calling church leaders to accountability. In 2002, when news reporters from around the world were looking for the inside story on the biggest news event of the year, they called us. In recent months, SNAP leaders have addressed the U. S. Conference of Catholic Bishops in Dallas, the Voice of the Faithful National Conference in Boston, and at renowned universities' symposiums and conferences, as well as Church, civic and professional organizations and events. We would welcome an opportunity to speak to your organization, too. For details on the SNAP Speakers Bureau, including fees and availabilities, contact Phil Saviano at SNAP-Boston.

SNAP Viewpoint:

  • SURVIVORS' WISDOM - Advice from someone who has "been there." This is a compilation of things that SNAP members have learned and shared with each other at SNAP meetings, with advice on healing, approaching the church, and staying emotionally healthy.
  • QUESTIONS GET ANSWERED: A St. Louis, MO reporter poses 17 questions to David Clohessy, the SNAP executive director, about the Catholic clergy abuse crisis.
